28-year-old woman facing drunk driving charges in Calgary

A fatal accident has led to charges against a driver, according to police. Calgary authorities responded to a car accident in the early morning of Oct. 23 that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man and sent most of his family to a local hospital. Police have suggested that drunk driving charges may be pending against the 28-year-old female driver involved in the crash.

The accident report says that a car carrying several members of a family was traveling eastbound towards Metis Trail when the accident occurred. An SUV driven by a 28-year-old woman reportedly ran a red light and struck the passenger side of the car. The force of the impact killed a 19-year-old man who was the front-seat passenger. The driver and three other passengers, all of whom were related to the deceased, suffered serious injuries and were rushed to local hospitals.

The driver of the SUV was carrying two passengers at the time of the crash. The status of these three individuals is unknown at this time. Police say they will be charging the driver with DUI, though they did not state how officers on the scene determined that the woman was intoxicated at the time of the crash. So far, no court date has been established in connection with this case.

While the crash in question was undoubtedly a tragedy, it does not follow that the other driver is necessarily guilty of the drunk driving charges she is facing. Calgary police will have to prove in court that the woman was indeed intoxicated when her vehicle struck the other car. If no testing was done to determine this, or if the testing was conducted in a manner inconsistent with protocol, any evidence gathered may be deemed inadmissible in court.
