Driver faces drunk driving charges, multiple other charges

A man accused of seriously injuring a world-record seeker in a hit-and-run is being hit with multiple charges, according to the RCMP. Alberta provincial police worked with RCMP forces to track down the man, who faces drunk driving charges as well as several charges pertaining to a number of robberies police believe him to have committed in the days leading up to the accident. He was scheduled to appear in a Calgary court on May 17.

According to the bizarre report, around 10:40 p.m. the night of May 14, an SUV believed to be driven by the 27-year-old suspect smashed into a Polish man on a scooter who was engaged in a round-the-world tour in pursuit of a Guinness world record. The driver fled the scene on foot and reportedly called police to report his vehicle as stolen. Police dogs tracked him to a nearby field where he was arrested.

Upon executing a search warrant at the man's home, police came to believe he may have also been responsible for a string of four armed robberies between May 8 and May 11. This includes the robbery of at least one liquor store in Olds. The man now stands charged with some 20 offences, including impaired driving causing bodily harm, assault and uttering threats, among others.

While it seems likely the driver will be convicted on at least some of the charges filed against him, the drunk driving charges might be the hardest to prove. Alberta prosecutors would need to prove the man had been intoxicated when he struck the scooter, and unless they administered blood alcohol testing directly upon his capture, those results might be skewed due to the passage of time. It is possible the drunk driving charges could be reduced or dropped if they cannot be sufficiently proved in court.
