Criminal defense: Alberta man faces drug charges

An Edmonton man is facing charges following a sting operation organized by ALERT's Organized Crime and Gang team. Alberta sources have reported that a search of homes in Terra Losa and Crestwood were subjected to a search back in May that led to the arrest of a 37-year-old man. So far, no court date has been announced, and it is unclear whether the man has retained criminal defense representation.

The report states that the searches of the residences took place on May 19 as part of an ongoing investigation into possible drug trafficking. Police reported that the Terra Losa home appeared to have been housing a laboratory converting cocaine into crack. A suspect was apprehended outside the home, carrying several packages of what police believed to be cocaine.

The suspect's home in Crestwood was also searched -- a search that revealed two firearms including a loaded handgun and rifle. Police also seized nearly 3 kilograms of cocaine as well as heroin and methamphetamine, cash believed to be crime proceeds and a luxury vehicle. The suspect is now charged with production and possession of a controlled substance, dangerous driving and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Drug-related investigations can be difficult to navigate, even for Alberta's dedicated anti-drug forces. Searches must be conducted in accordance with warrants and must also take into consideration the rights of any suspect(s) apprehended during the course of such a search. Criminal defense representation will likely ask for more information about the searches and how they were carried out. If police did not conduct their searches in accordance with the letter of the law, some evidence gathered could be considered ineligible for presentation in court.
