Drunk driving charges filed against Alberta man

A bizarre crash in Edmonton has led to the arrest of an 18-year-old man, according to local sources. Alberta police have filed drunk driving charges against the man who reportedly crashed his truck into a dental office. So far, no court date has been announced in his case.

According to witnesses, three young men were seen having drinks in a local bar, a fact corroborated by the bar staff. Around 9:30 p.m., the men exited the bar and got into a pickup truck, which the driver immediately backed into a parked vehicle. The driver accelerated forward and struck two other vehicles before entering the roadway, where his truck struck a fourth vehicle before leaving the road on the other side.

The truck then smashed into the side of a dental office, breaking the front windows and damaging the wall. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the impact, but considerable damage was done. Police estimate the cost of the damage done to the other vehicles involved in the crash is around $10,000, while the cost to the dental office is likely a further $10,000. The driver was arrested on the scene and stands charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving.

Depending on how the arrest was handled, drunk driving charges are possible to fight in court. In order to prove the man's intoxication, Alberta police would have had to administer a breath or blood test to register blood alcohol level and determine if he was over the legal limit. If this test is not administered, or is administered later in the arrest process, this can influence the decision of a court by calling into question what results, if any, were obtained.
