22-year-old charged in fatal drunk driving crash

A tragic car accident happened on Feb. 27 in which a 71-year-old man lost his life. Police say that an intoxicated woman, who was already barred from driving, was operating a stolen Honda Civic that hit the man. The man was driving a Buick Regal at the time of the collision, which happened at approximately 1 a.m.

Police have further alleged that 20 minutes prior to the collision, the Honda Civic was stolen and the woman hit another vehicle before she struck the Buick. The 22-year-old female driver of the Honda was arrested last Monday and ultimately charged with negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death, driving impaired causing death, motor vehicle theft and driving while disqualified.

At this time, the woman is still presumed innocent because none of the allegations have been proven. However, she is being detained in custody. Also, in addition to the current allegations being brought against her, court records indicate that this is not the first time this woman has been charged and/or sentenced for a crime. In fact, she has been found guilty of seven different offences dating back to 2012. Among those offences were failing to abide by curfew and failing to abstain from alcohol consumption.

Whenever a Calgary resident is accused of causing a drunk driving-related death, the charges are extremely serious because if a conviction occurs, the allegedly drunk driver could spend many years in jail. Furthermore, if the individual has a previous criminal record, the threat of jail time could be even more severe. Still, the accused individual will have the right to defend him or herself against the charges in court.
