Alleged female bank robber and companion arrested

A 30-year-old woman was arrested last month on a warrant for allegedly robbing a bank earlier this summer in Calgary.

According to reports, the Calgary Police Service made a traffic stop on Aug. 30, 2016, in northeast Calgary. The woman and a man, 34, were both arrested on outstanding warrants at that time.

The woman was initially charged with possession of a weapon and robbery stemming from an incident on June 23 of this year when she allegedly entered a bank on the 8200 block of N.E. Centre Street and passed the teller a note, indicating she had a firearm.

The woman was also arrested on breach of conditions of a prior release, enter and theft and house break in a separate case. Following the Tuesday arrest, she also faces charges of possession of property under $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, identity theft, possession of marijuana, and triple counts of being unlawfully at large, among others.

Her companion was arrested on double counts of resisting arrest and operating a vehicle while disqualified, identity fraud, possession of stolen property over $5,000, five counts of unlawfully being at large, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and other miscellaneous charges. While he was being taken into custody, a police officer was injured.

Defendants who get picked up on a laundry list of charges stemming from multiple incidents can often ask their defence counsel to approach the Crown about the possibility of negotiating a plea bargain. Defence lawyers can sometimes get a better deal for their clients by offering to have them plead guilty to lesser charges in exchange for the Crown agreeing to drop the more serious felonies that could send them away to prison if they were to be convicted in court.
