Drunk driving charges filed against Alberta man

Police in Edmonton are investigating a man who is accused of smashing into multiple vehicles while performing donuts in a parking lot. Alberta news has reported the man may be facing drunk driving charges following the bizarre event. So far, the man has not been publicly identified by police and no court date has been set.

Edmonton authorities say the man was caught on camera by witnesses as the large truck he was driving did donuts in the parking lot of a business. He eventually lost control of the truck, which crashed through a fence and into several other vehicles, some of which were occupied at the time of the collision. Estimates range between four and six vehicles were struck before the man fled the scene in his truck.

Police have confirmed a male suspect was taken into custody sometime later. The man appears to be facing drunk driving charges, though no mention was made of how police corroborated his identity. They also did not comment on what kind of roadside sobriety test was conducted to determine the man's allegedly intoxicated state. It is not known whether the man remains in police custody at this time.

It will be the burden of the Alberta prosecution to provide evidence that the man was indeed under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. This could include records of sobriety or blood tests conducted by police. If no such evidence exists, or if it was collected in a manner that violated the man's personal rights, the drunk driving charges could be reduced or even dropped.
