Criminal defense: 2 charged in drug bust in Calgary

Following a sizeable seizure of drugs and weapons on Jan. 24, two people are facing 41 charges. Calgary police acted on an investigation that had been ongoing since November and arrested a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman. It has not been confirmed if the pair have sought criminal defense representation at this time.

According to the police report, officers were tipped off by an anonymous source about a large volume of drugs and weapons that were being stored in the Canyon Meadows and Lower Mount Royal areas. After an investigation lasting some two months, they moved on a storage locker, two vehicles and two different residences. It was not reported whether they retained search warrants for each of these searches.

Police say they found a total of $8,000 in cash plus an additional $700 that appeared to be counterfeit currency. They also uncovered a cache of weapons, including knives and brass knuckles. A shotgun, handgun and revolver -- all with ammunition -- were also recovered, along with a .22 caliber rifle. Finally, they said they found various volumes of marijuana, human growth hormone, cocaine and methamphetamine. The collected evidence led them to charge two individuals with 41 different drug and weapon charges, none of which were detailed in the media report concerning the arrests.

It will be up to Calgary prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the duo is guilty of the crimes charged. Criminal defense representation will likely review the search warrants, if any, as well as the arrest records for both parties. If police did not observe due process in any aspect of their investigation, it could influence any of the 41 charges filed.
